03 The Family Tree

Not your tree. The family's.

Most family trees are a private file, maintained by one person, and lost when they're gone. On Aftr, the tree belongs to everyone in it. Every member sees their place, can add a name, a date, a photograph. The record stays alive across generations.

07 Considered questions

The questions worth asking.

About the product
Is sharing passwords after death really illegal?
In most places, yes. Accessing accounts using the credentials of a deceased person without proper legal authority can violate computer fraud laws, even with the best intentions. Aftr gives your executor a verified, documented, legal pathway.
What stops Aftr from reading my Vault?
End-to-end encryption with keys derived on your device. We genuinely cannot read what's inside. The Vault is sealed by your passphrase and a Guardian quorum. Neither alone is enough, and Aftr the company holds neither.
Is this a will? Do I still need a lawyer?
Aftr is not a will, and we don't pretend to be. We sit alongside one, holding the operational detail: passwords, accounts, instructions, the things a will cannot list. For a will itself, work with the lawyer you already have.
About security
What happens if Aftr, the company, goes away?
Annual members are notified with a year-long export window. We've planned for our own ending, the same way we ask you to.
About what happens after
How do you verify that someone has died?
A Life Guardian opens a release request, attaches a death certificate or official documentation, and a quorum of your other Guardians attests. The Vault then opens to them, and never to us. The exact procedure is in your Executor Playbook, and rehearsable while you're alive.
What does my family pay, after I'm gone?
Nothing. The release of your estate is included in your membership (annual or lifetime), and your family gets the printed memoir, all the documents, and a year of read-only access at no further cost.
Is the Life Story really written by AI? Does it sound like me?
Your recordings are the source. The narrative is stitched from your words: phrasing, idiom, pause, rhythm. You read every chapter before it's sealed. Nothing is invented, and nothing leaves the chapter unless you've signed off on it. After your death, your family receives only chapters you approved.

For when you're ready

You don't have to do all of it today.
The first ten minutes are enough.

Begin with whatever's lightest: the Vault, a single Life Story recording, the first names on the Family Tree. The plan builds itself over time.
